# Running a tournament (/en/businesses/events/tournaments/running-a-tournament)

Golf simulator competitions have no charts. They run on start lists and scorecards, described in [Golf simulator competitions](/businesses/events/tournaments/golf-simulator-competitions).

## When registration closes [#when-registration-closes]

Each bracket confirms on its own when registration closes.

- **A bracket below its minimum is cancelled**, and its players are told why. The other brackets carry on.
- **Limits per resource** keep as many courts as the sign-ups fill and release the rest. Players beyond what the kept courts hold move to the queue, or off the bracket when it has none.
- **The chart draws itself** for a confirmed bracket with a format. A bracket whose format is still open waits for you to pick one.
- **Payments fall due,** as for [events](/businesses/events/registration-and-payments#when-customers-pay).

The courts of every bracket are held on the calendar from the moment you publish, as with [events](/businesses/events#resources-and-the-calendar).

## Charts and teams [#charts-and-teams]

**Generate chart** creates a bracket's matches from its current teams. **Reset chart** deletes the matches and keeps the sign-ups, payments and the queue, as long as no match has a score.

From the participant table you can move whole teams to another bracket, swap players between pairs, reshuffle the pairs randomly, or put another customer in a player's place. Make the moves before you generate the chart, or reset and generate it again after them. Tell the players about these changes in the tournament chat.

### Starting order [#starting-order]

In Mexicano and knockout brackets you can rank the teams yourself with **Set starting order…** in the bracket's menu, best first. In Mexicano, the top four play on the first resource in the first round, the next four on the second, and so on. In a knockout, places 1 and 2 start in opposite halves of the chart. Without an order the first round is a random draw, and **Use a random draw** returns to it.

Set the order before registration closes, since the chart draws itself then. Teams that join after you save the order follow the ranked teams in a random draw. To change the order once the chart exists, reset the chart, save the new order and generate the chart again.

A team moved to a bracket with a different price keeps its payments. To refund or charge the difference, open the player's **Manage payment** in the participant table.

## Entering scores [#entering-scores]

Three groups can enter a match result:

- **Players**, for their own matches, in the Thril app or on the web.
- **Tournament managers**, for any match in the tournament. Read more in [Tournament managers](/businesses/events/tournaments#tournament-managers).
- **Staff**, for any match, from the bracket. Staff can also set a forfeit and the match's start and end time.

Thril accepts scores within the bracket's [score rules](/businesses/events/tournaments/formats-and-brackets#sets-and-score-rules), and the leaderboard updates as results come in.

### Running a Mexicano bracket [#running-a-mexicano-bracket]

A Mexicano bracket draws its next round from the leaderboard as soon as every match of the last round has a result. Rounds keep coming until the bracket's booked court time ends, and **Generate next round** draws one yourself. Players who don't fit on the courts sit the round out, and Thril shares the sit-outs evenly.

Staff correct Mexicano results. A corrected result redraws the rounds after it, until a later round has results.

### Ending an Americano or Mexicano bracket when time runs out [#ending-an-americano-or-mexicano-bracket-when-time-runs-out]

Americano and Mexicano nights often end with the court time, with matches still unplayed. **Remove unplayed matches** in the bracket's menu deletes every match without a final result and keeps the results already entered. The bracket then shows as completed, with its final results, for staff and players.

## Cancelling [#cancelling]

**Cancel bracket** cancels one bracket, and **Cancel tournament** cancels every bracket. Both ask how to refund the players who paid: through Thril, to the original payment method, as credits, outside Thril, or not at all. A refund to the original payment method may carry a [refund fee](/businesses/payments). A cancellation message reaches the players with the notification.

To keep the players of a bracket that might not fill, move them to another bracket before registration closes.

## Exporting the players [#exporting-the-players]

**Download participants as CSV** exports the players of every bracket with their bracket, contact details, price and form answers, for name tags, a printed draw or your own records.
