# Emails (/en/businesses/marketing/emails)

You write and send emails in Thril to the customers you choose, straight from your customer register: a newsletter, an offer, a notice to one class. Thril checks each customer's consent for you. For a message timed to each customer, such as a reminder before every booking, use a [workflow](/businesses/marketing/workflows). For a notice in the Thril app with a push, post an [announcement](/businesses/marketing/announcements).

## Typical emails [#typical-emails]

**A monthly newsletter.** Write it once, **Save as template**, and start next month's from the template. Send it as **Marketing** to **All customers**, and Thril leaves out everyone without consent.

**A notice to one course.** Make a [customer list](/businesses/marketing/customer-lists) of the course's participants with the **Courses** filter. A **Transactional** email to it tells everyone that next week's session moves, consent or not.

**A personal win-back.** A marketing email to your lapsed customers list starts with "Hi" and the customer's **First name**. Customers without a first name get the fallback, such as "Hi there".

---

## Marketing or transactional [#marketing-or-transactional]

The **Email type** decides who may receive the email. The choice is a legal one.

| Type | For | Who gets it | Unsubscribe link does |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------- |
| **Marketing** | Offers, newsletters, invitations, win-backs | Recipients with **Email marketing consent**. Company customers unless they opted out | Withdraws marketing consent |
| **Transactional** | Closures, schedule changes, important account news | Every selected recipient | Stops every email from your company |

### Email permissions [#email-permissions]

Two settings on each customer decide which of your emails reach them:

| Setting | What it stops when off | Who turns it off |
| ---------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Email marketing consent** | Marketing emails from **Emails** and workflows | The customer, from their settings or a marketing email's unsubscribe link, or staff |
| **Receives announcement and marketing emails** | Every email you send from **Emails** and workflows, marketing and transactional alike | The customer, from a transactional email's unsubscribe link or their settings, or staff |

A customer who unsubscribes from a transactional email gets no email from your company until they turn **Announcements by email** back on for your venue under **Customerships** in their settings on the web or **My venues** in the app, or staff tick the box for them. A guardian who unsubscribes also stops the email meant for their children.

[Announcements](/businesses/marketing/announcements) in the app and the emails Thril sends about a customer's own bookings and payments reach customers whatever these settings say. Company customers have [settings of their own](/businesses/customers/company-customers#email-to-company-customers).

---

## Sender, footer and personalization [#sender-footer-and-personalization]

Customers see your venue's name as the sender. The address is Thril's, or your own once you [connect your domain](/businesses/marketing/email-domain). Replies go to the address you choose. Thril adds a footer with your venue's name and address and the unsubscribe link.

**Personalize** puts the customer's name and other details in the subject and the body. Each token has a **Fallback** for recipients without a value of their own. A guardian who gets an email for their child reads the child's name.

---

## Recipients [#recipients]

Choose **All customers**, with **Include customers from** the current venue only or company-wide, or **Select recipients** to pick customer lists and individual customers. **Don't send email to these recipients** takes customer lists and individual customers, and they never get the email, even when a chosen list includes them. To offer a membership to everyone who doesn't have one, send to **All customers** and leave out a list of your members.

**Estimated recipients** applies the consent rules. The final list is fixed when the email sends.

---

## Sending and scheduling [#sending-and-scheduling]

**Send immediately** sends now. **Schedule for later** picks a time, and you can edit or delete the email until it sends. **Send test email** sends a copy to the addresses you enter, whatever their consent. Use it to check the layout and links in a real inbox.

---

## Delivery statistics [#delivery-statistics]

A sent marketing email shows its delivery, open, click-through and unsubscribe rates, its spam complaints, and each recipient's delivery status. Thril warns when spam complaints run high, because a high rate hurts the delivery of your later emails too. If you see the warning, check whether the list reaches people who don't remember agreeing to your emails.

---

## Sales from an email [#sales-from-an-email]

A sent email with links to Thril shows what it sold: the purchases, sign-ups and new customers from people who clicked it, and each link's clicks and sales. Thril tags the links itself, and every venue sees these figures, with or without campaign tracking. With the [campaign tracking](/businesses/marketing/campaign-tracking) add-on, each email also shows up next to your other campaigns, under **Thril emails**.
