# Grow memberships (/en/businesses/playbooks/grow-memberships)

A member pays every month whether it rains or not, books more and tells friends. Growing memberships means getting people to join, and keeping the ones you have when a card fails, an injury hits or summer comes.

Renewal follow-up and loyalty tiers use
  [workflows](/businesses/marketing/workflows), a paid add-on. To get them,
press **I'm interested** on the **Workflows** page in the dashboard, and
  Thril's sales team contacts you.

## Member benefits [#member-benefits]

People join for what the membership gives them every week. Decide that first, from these [member benefits](/businesses/shop/memberships/benefits):

- **A member price.** A reservation discount or custom pricing on the hours you want members to play.
- **Earlier booking.** **Early reservation** lets members book days before everyone else. Where prime time sells out, this is worth more than a discount.
- **Members-only time.** A [pricing rule](/businesses/reservations/pricing) with **Require membership to book** keeps an hour for members. Everyone else is offered the membership.
- **Members-only events.** Set an event or tournament's visibility to **Members only**. See [Classes, events and tournaments](/businesses/events).
- **Door access.** With Thrilock, Rollock, Tolotrack or Kulku.io, a member gets in without a booking during the hours you set. See [Door access for members](/businesses/integrations/member-access).
- **Classes included.** A studio or a gym gives members its classes at a member price, set in each class's **Discounts**. A monthly cap comes from the membership's event restrictions. See [Reservation and event restrictions](/businesses/shop/memberships/restrictions#event-restrictions).

[Membership types and examples](/businesses/shop/memberships/membership-types) has recipes for the common shapes: an open-ended monthly membership, an annual commitment paid monthly, a seasonal pass.

## Trials and introductory prices [#trials-and-introductory-prices]

A recurring membership can start with a **Trial period** in days or months, then **Introductory pricing** for the first renewals, then the normal price. The trial and the intro price go to customers who are new to that membership. A returning-member offer is a membership of its own. See [Pricing and trials](/businesses/shop/memberships/pricing).

Turn on **Promote this offer on the venue page** to show the offer as a card on your venue page, such as "14 days free, then €49/month".

A **Sale limit** sells an opening offer to the first 100 buyers, with your regular membership on sale next to it. See [Sale limit, sale window and regular price](/businesses/shop/sales-settings).

To email the offer to regulars who are not members yet, build a [customer list](/businesses/marketing/customer-lists) such as **No. of reservations** more than 5 and **Last reservation date** less than 60 days ago. In the [email](/businesses/marketing/emails), add a list of your members under **Don't send email to these recipients**.

## A membership as a welcome gift [#a-membership-as-a-welcome-gift]

A [welcome offer](/businesses/marketing/welcome-offer) can gift a membership without recurring payments to people who join your customer register, such as a free one-month pass with the member benefits. When the gift runs out, the customer knows what the paid membership is like.

---

## Failed renewals [#failed-renewals]

A renewal payment fails when a card expires or runs out of money, and a member who never hears about it drifts away.

The **Failed renewal payment** workflow template emails the member a week after the renewal fell due, when the membership has a contract, a minimum commitment or a notice period. If the renewal stays unpaid another week, it asks staff whether to offer credits to keep the member.

An open-ended membership without a notice period ends when a renewal stays unpaid for a week. Call those members within the week. The payment status on the membership's **Members** tab shows who has an unpaid renewal. See [Unpaid renewals](/businesses/shop/memberships/renewals-and-payments#unpaid-renewals).

---

## Pauses [#pauses]

A member who is injured or away for the summer often cancels for lack of another option. A [membership pause](/businesses/shop/memberships/pauses) suspends the benefits for a time, and can pause the payments too. Staff set the pause, and the member comes back without signing up again.

Members cancel in the app unless you turn off **Let members cancel in the app**. With it off, every cancellation comes to you, and staff can offer a pause before the member leaves. See [Cancelling in the app](/businesses/shop/memberships/contracts-and-cancellation#cancelling-in-the-app).

---

## Loyalty tiers [#loyalty-tiers]

The **Membership tiers by spend** workflow template moves the customers on a list between bronze, silver and gold memberships every month, by how much they have spent. Set the amounts to yours, and give the tier memberships a price of €0. Each tier gets its own benefits, such as an extra day of early booking for gold.

## Membership sales and member counts [#membership-sales-and-member-counts]

Statistics count membership sales. The member count comes from the membership itself.

- In [Statistics](/businesses/statistics), **Gross sales by source incl. VAT** lists each membership by name, with what it sold and how many purchases. Read the membership's row for this month, then set the **Date range** to the month before you started and read it again.
- The membership's **Members** tab lists every holder, with their status. Count it at the start of each month.
- A dynamic [customer list](/businesses/marketing/customer-lists) with the **Memberships** filter holds your current members. Add **Last reservation date** more than 30 days ago to find the members who have stopped coming before they cancel.
- **Memberships given** on the welcome offer page counts the gifts. Compare it with the members who later bought the paid one.
- A workflow with the **Goal** **Buys a membership** shows how many of its customers bought one.
