# Run a tournament (/en/businesses/playbooks/run-a-tournament)

A tournament fills a block of courts at a fixed price per player, brings people who would not have booked that evening, and keeps them at the venue for hours.

Golf simulator competitions, such as a Stableford night, have their own scorecards and start blocks, covered in [Golf simulator competitions](/businesses/events/tournaments/golf-simulator-competitions). For a season of matches over months, run a [league](/businesses/playbooks/run-a-league-season).

## Formats and brackets [#formats-and-brackets]

A bracket is one competition with its own format, price and courts. One tournament can hold a beginners' Americano and a competitive round robin. Each tournament is one sport. A padel and a tennis competition are two tournaments. See [Tournaments](/businesses/events/tournaments) and [Formats and brackets](/businesses/events/tournaments/formats-and-brackets).

Social formats such as Americano and Mexicano fill fastest, because players sign up alone and everyone plays every round. If you don't know yet whether you will have 12 or 24 players, turn on **Decide bracket formats after registration** and choose when you know.

**Maximum players in the tournament** caps the whole event when your courts hold fewer players than all the brackets together. A bracket that ends registration below its minimum is cancelled, and its players are told. Lower the minimum or move players before registration closes.

---

## Courts on the calendar [#courts-on-the-calendar]

The courts of every bracket are held on the calendar from the moment you publish. Publish before customers book the evening.

---

## Payment before the evening [#payment-before-the-evening]

The price is per player. Players can leave until registration closes, unless **Disable participant cancellation** is on, and they pay in the app once it closes. After that the place is binding. **Allow event payments before confirmation** lets them pay as soon as they sign up, for every event at the venue. See [Event registration and payments](/businesses/events/registration-and-payments).

Session cards pay too. A card limited to tournaments and social events up to a price lets your regulars prepay a season of tournament nights. See [Session cards](/businesses/shop/session-cards).

---

## Early-bird prices [#early-bird-prices]

A [promo code](/businesses/marketing/promo-codes) with an **Event discount** covers tournaments. Give it an active period that ends a week before the tournament, and you have an early-bird price. Limit it to a [customer list](/businesses/marketing/customer-lists), such as last tournament's players, to keep the discount for your regulars.

A members-only tournament works the other way round: visibility **Members only** makes it a member benefit.

---

## Promotion [#promotion]

- An [announcement](/businesses/marketing/announcements) on your venue page, with a push notification when registration opens.
- A marketing [email](/businesses/marketing/emails) to a list of players in the sport.
- The tournament chat for everything after sign-up: the schedule, the court plan, a change of time.

---

## Sales on the day [#sales-on-the-day]

Players at a tournament buy drinks, balls, grips and a racket for the one who forgot theirs. Ring them up at the [POS](/businesses/pos) with your [shop products](/businesses/shop/pro-shop) and rental items, and name the player on the sale, as in [Sell more at the front desk](/businesses/playbooks/sell-more-at-the-front-desk). Put the tournament's bestsellers in **Shortcuts** so the queue at the desk moves.

---

## A monthly repeat [#a-monthly-repeat]

After the first one, **Save as template** keeps the setup. A recurring tournament repeats every chosen number of weeks or months, as a monthly Americano would.

---

## Entry fees and sales on the day [#entry-fees-and-sales-on-the-day]

- **Events** in [Statistics](/businesses/statistics) counts tournaments with your other events. In the **Ranking** card, pick **Series and events** to compare one tournament night with the next.
- **Event sales** in **Gross sales by source incl. VAT** holds the entry fees. **Shop product sales** lists what sold on the day per product.
- **Payment methods incl. VAT** splits sales into **Thril** and **Point of sale**. Set the **Date range** to the tournament day. The point of sale share shows what the desk sold beyond the entry fees paid in the app.
- The promo code's usage list shows how many players took the early-bird price.
